Prof Joanna Wardlaw has been interviewed for this month’s European Medical Journal Neurology. Hear from her, first-hand, about her curiosity, challenging traditional views, establishing international professional standards, as well as combination approaches to disease prevention and treatment. She discusses the latest advances in cerebral small vessel disease and lacunar stroke research. Joanna is a leading expert in the pathophysiology, prevention and treatment of brain vascular disease, e.g. stroke and dementia.Her current focus is cerebral SVD mechanisms, clinical and imaging presentations, and standards for assessment of imaging. She has run a number of clinical trials of interventions to prevent progression of the clinical and cognitive consequences of SVD (LACI-1, LACI-2, LACI-3). Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to improving facilities for imaging research and she has established a worldwide network of national and international medical and scientific collaborators.Joanna is Professor of Applied Neuroimaging; as well asHead of Neuroimaging Sciences and Edinburgh ImagingDirector of Row Fogo Centre for Research into Ageing and the BrainGroup Leader and Clinical Director of the Centre for Vascular Dementia Research at the UK Dementia Research Institute; and has a very long list of accolades and fellowships, recognising her outstanding contribution to research in her field.
