Brain swelling in the days following a stroke caused by a brain bleed is linked to a higher risk of death and disability, a study suggests. Led by Clinical Neurologist, Neshika Samarasekera, this study is a meta-analysis of individual participant data. These findings confirm that targeting swelling after brain haemorrhage can reduce the risk of death or being dependent on others. They also provide a three-day time window for starting interventions for swelling which could be tested in clinical trials. It’s an exciting development since at present we do not have any specific medical treatment for this group of patients.
