Research in a nutshell
Traumatic brain injury in humans occurs when the brain is damaged through an external force. Many patients never fully recover because the human brain has only a very limited ability to repair itself after injury. In contrast to humans, a small tropical fish, the zebrafish, can repair its brain completely after injury. Hence, zebrafish suffer no long-term consequences from brain injury. Our research aims at identifying the mechanisms that underlie the zebrafish's amazing repair capacity. The ultimate goal of our research is to contribute to the development of new therapies for brain injury in human patients.
